The Blacker the Berry...

Everyone knows that spooky season is my favorite! So of course I’m super excited that Amazon Prime has been releasing all of these original horror movies this month. The first one I tried was Black as Night and I absolutely loved it.

Black as Night is the story of a young Black girl named Shawna who spends her summer getting revenge on the vampires that killed her mother. Shawna and her friends infiltrate a coven and basically save the whole hood. I loved that this movie battled self esteem issues as well as struggles of young people growing up in the hood but didn’t make these themes overly pushy. Shawna finds her strength in the courage it takes for her to protect her friends and her home and even though she finds a boo in the process, he only reassures what she is growing to learn about herself.

I love anything based in New Orleans. It’s my favorite city that I’ve ever visited and the rich history always makes it a great backdrop for movies like this.
